Stormers bolster lock stocks as Springboks hopeful returns on long-term deal

The Stormers have announced that experienced second-row forward JD Schickerling will be returning to their ranks after signing a three-year contract.
The 28-year-old is the latest player to rejoin the Cape Town-based outfit, who also announced recently that double Rugby World Cup-winning front-row Steven Kitshoff will return next season after he and his current club, Ulster, agreed to an early departure.
Stormers debut in 2016
A former South African Schools and Junior Springboks representative, Schickerling came through the system at the Stormers and made his debut for the men from the Cape in 2016.
He went on to make 40 appearances for them before joining Japan Rugby League One club Kobelco Kobe Steelers in 2021.
Schickerling is comfortable in both the number four or five jersey and he will add valuable second-row depth to the Stormers squad when he makes his return in July.
Stormers director of rugby John Dobson said Schickerling’s return will be bolster his squad, especially given his pedigree and rugby roots in the region.

“JD is yet another player who was born and bred here, so to have him back in the fold again is very exciting,” he told the Stormers’ official website.
“You will not find a more hard-working rugby player anywhere and he is someone that will slot right back into our environment without any hassle.
“Having worked with JD for many years, I know how much this team means to him and we are all looking forward to seeing what he can bring for us when he pulls the DHL Stormers jersey on again.”
Meanwhile, Schickerling revealed that he and his family are delighted that he will return to Cape Town to represent his childhood team once again.
‘Kept in touch’ with former teammates
“Since leaving three years ago I have kept in touch with a lot of the guys and obviously followed the DHL Stormers closely,” he said.
“What they have achieved since then is incredibly impressive and I can’t wait to be a part of it again.
“I’ll be doing all I can to bring my part and make an impact for the team.”
