South Africa has a long line of world-class players who have donned the Green and Gold of the Springboks, but can you name the ten players who have done so the most times?
The Springboks are the most successful Rugby World Cup team of all-time, winning the global tournament on four occasions.
Springboks in Rugby World Cups
Kitch Christie’s charges were the first Springbok team to win the William Webb Ellis Cup. They claimed the title in South Africa’s first attempt in 1995 and famously did so on home soil following the end of their isolation from the sport.
It would take 12 years and two failed attempts for South Africa to claim their second title, doing so in France on this occasion, defeating England in the showpiece event under the guidance of head coach Jake White.
After getting knocked out in the World Cup quarter-finals of their title defence in 2011, the Springboks would finish third overall four years later as they lost to eventual winners New Zealand in the 2015 semi-finals.
However, that all changed in 2019 in Japan as the Springboks claimed their third title, defeating England in the final again in Yokohama after a remarkable turnaround led by coach Rassie Erasmus who took over the side during one of their darkest periods in terms of results.
Erasmus’ assistant in 2019, Jacques Nienaber, led the side during the 2023 World Cup and guided them to a successful title defence, becoming just the second nation to go back-to-back, this time beating New Zealand in the final in Paris.
The ten most capped Springboks of all time all featured in a successful Rugby World Cup campaign, and two stars lifted the William Webb Ellis Cup on two occasions.
Four of the ten have played over 100 Test matches in the forward pack for the Springboks with three backline players reaching that milestone.
At the time of writing, two of the top ten had yet to hang up their Test boots and were still available to be selected for South Africa.
